maxine yolanda

oscillating between extroversion and quiet introspection

A collection of songs by maxine yolanda that initially originated out of sporadic bouts of composing at the piano, in a stream-of-consciousness matter. Those very personal and inert origins of the songs still flicker through the fabric, yet have transformed into something of almost delicate brutality, oscillating between a curious familiarity and unsettling strangeness, between extroversion and quiet introspection.

While playfully hinting at various influences left and right throughout musical history, the songs transcend any obvious references simply by their very personal nature. The songs are harmonically rich, with melodies moving up, down and sideways, bewildering vocal lines to steady rhythmic foundations – still one gets the sense that here, a song is never sacrificed for the pure display of complexity or ability or some other form of spectacle, but that the writing is, as should always be the case, the highest authority, ruling with a gentle yet decisive touch.
